The Military and Veterans Service Alliance (MAVSA) of the Lowcountry exists to provide a single source of information that a military service person, veteran, retiree, or family member thereof can use to access information and assistance resolving problems relating to health, both physical and mental, housing, food, clothing, transportation, education, etc. The Alliance also provides a source of information that veterans can use to connect with other veterans in the various organizations that exist throughout the Lowcountry.
The population (as of July 2016) of Beaufort County, South Carolina, is approximately 183,000. Of that number there are approximately 20,000 veterans, 6,500 active duty service people, and 5,400 Marine recruits. Of the 20,000 veterans, there is a significant number of military retirees. There are currently 8,200 veterans between the ages of 65 and 84 living in Beaufort County. The aging population of those veterans, particularly south of the Broad River, creates an increasing need for community services. MAVSA endeavors to meet that need.
